Renunciation as in Sadhana Panchakam
Man is perfect in His essential Nature;
But He at the present moment is seemingly caught up in the vagaries of his
embodiments and its play. Having been seemingly caught up, he moves from
embodiments to embodiments slavish to its vicious and tumultuous changes. The
Sacred scriptures of The Hindus teach all those who approach with sincerity the
Means as well as the Goal to perfection. The Goal of Man is in re-cognising his
True & perfect Nature of Happiness.
Sadhana Panchakam is supposedly
the last of Bhashyakaara Bhagawan Sri Adi Sankaracharya's teachings, also
Called as Pancha Ratnam (5 jewels), these 5 versed compact teaching containing
within itself 40 Spiritual Indicators. Holding within its core are 40 means for
the achievement of the Goal, in short they re-produce and provide to the Sadhak
the complete Birds-eye view of the Vaidika Dharma marga. The word Sadhana
encompasses within its groove 2 words-Sadhak(worthy student or Mumukshu-one
desirous of liberation) & Sadhya(Goal or Lakshya)
We will in brief look at the
Tyaga (renouncing or giving up) aspect as instructed in this text.
Kamye Mathisthyajatam:
Renouncing all desire oriented actions.
All actions which begin with I & I want- have
to completely shunned, because these ego & ego centric desires alone add up
the Vasana encrustations which give volatility to the Karmic cycle of Birth
& death. A mind which is tormented with endless streams of desires will
never be able to ebb the flow of extro-vertedness. How can such a mind be able
to grasp the inner truths of silence? Hence the Sadhak is advised to give up
all desire oriented actions, in this way no new vasanas are added into our
collection pool (sanchita). Every action begins with a thought & is done
with a specific or general result in mind. At the Realm of thought, the ego
centre is replaced with “Ishwara Arpana Buddhi”- Intellect dedicates the action
for the LORD- The Kartrutva Bhava(doership) is replaced with Karna
Bhava(Instrument) in the hands of the LORD and at the realm of the result of
the action with “Prasada Buddhi”-accepting whatever that comes as the gift of
the LORD-Meaning Bhoktha Bhava is replaced with Santhustha Bhava. In this way
The Punya arising out of The Ishwara arpana Buddhi is transmuted into Chitta
Sudhi (purity of the Mind) which is an essential requisite for our spiritual
Journey.
Shantyadi paricheeyatam dridhataram karmashu santhyajatam:
The group of 6 folds inner wealth
Shanti-control of mind
Dhanti-control of sense organs
Uparati- resultant state when
mind & sense organs are controlled
Titiksha-Forbearance
Shraddha-Faith in Guru,Vedas
& Lord
Samadhana-Single pointedness
are to be cultivated in full measure. Those desire
prompted actions which were performed with an attitude of gaining limited
fruits have to be renounced completely. Meaning mind should no more be employed
in any limited gains, for his intense desire for Liberation becomes His Be-all
of his life. Having purified his heart he gives up all actions the sadhaka
enters the holy portals of Sanyaasa. Endowed fully with Sadhana Chatushtayam
the sadhaka approaches with humility the feet of the Guru. Soon after Guru
Upasadana the vedantic path of shravana, manana & niddhidhyasana has to be
practiced.
Ahar
ahar Garva parithyajatam : again
& again Reject Pride.
When the sadhaka intellectually gets convinced
that "I am Brahman” Here Sruti warns that he may encounter a major Hurdle
of the EGO, which gets strengthened by this erroneous thought of
achievement."I am Brahman" is not a boastful statement of superiority
over others, but the most humble statement emanating in the inner bosom of the
sadhaka because He realises that to achieve "That" his Ego should get
completely dissolved. In the dissolution of the sadhaka rises the immanence of
the "Realised Soul". The Vasana Encrustations (ignorance) well
collected over the past gets burned up in the Knowledge of the Self. Herein
Chitta Ekagrata or single pointedness becomes perfected.
Budhajanaihi
Vada parithyajatam: Never argue with Wise men.
Men of wisdom are men who have tasted the bliss
of the Pure Self-the realms through which they transact are un-known to the
ignorant. The Mahatmas whenever they transact, if at all they wish to-should
not be opposed, for they operate from the Pure Realms of Absolute, which will
be completely un-intelligible to the ignorant mind-by arguing with them we are
actually obstructing their infinite love which bathes us clean of all
impurities.
To summarize- chitta sudhi gained by karma yoga
& chitta ekagrata gained by upasana leads a sadhaka to karma sanyasa, after
Guru upasadana the Sravana, manana & niddhidhyasana practices with focused
effort will lead him to Moksha- liberation
AUM Tat Sat.
